UI/UX Case Study

Project Overview

Background

Iris Cafe is a restaurant located where the city and suburbs meet. They cater to both young professionals and families. Their mission is to make delicious food available for everyone.

The Problem

A lot of customers have voiced to the owner how challenging it is to try and plan for meals each night of the week. They wish there was a way to have all their meals and ordering planned out in advance.

The Goal

Design an app that allows customers to choose a weekly meal plan up to a few weeks in advance. Allowing options to skip days and choose between delivery or pick-up.

Design Process

User Research

Pain Points

Have difficulty affording healthier foods all the time when having to eat out so much.

Affordability

No options for meal plans which offer the ability to order for the coming week or weeks.

Planning

Have difficulty finding time to prepare meals or search for good take-out options every night.

Time

The user group confirmed most of the initial assumptions about Iris Cafe customers. Beyond time, some of the main frustrations displayed were a general anxiety about having to find different meals every night and not being able to have set meal plans ahead of time.

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. Two primary user groups identified through research were young professionals and busy parents who don’t have the time or energy to prepare meals most nights of the week.

Summary

Persona: Sara Mullins

Sara is a busy working mother who has difficulty in finding time to cook for her two children. She needs a restaurant that can provide affordable meal plans which allow her to pre-plan in advance.

Problem Statement

Starting The Design

User flow reflects the user’s progress from the beginning of the meal plan selection process through completion of the order.

User Flow

In the initial design phase I made sure to use screen designs that were based on feedback and findings from user research.

Easy navigation through the meal planning section was an important need to address in the design.

Low-Fidelity Wireframes

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Usability Studies

Round 2 Findings

  • Users want to save their progress in the meal plan section.

  • Users want better direction for the meal plan section.

Round 1 Findings

  • Users want the option to change their meal plan if neccessary.

  • Users want the option to not select a meal on certain days.

Refining The Design

Originally, the design required users to choose a meal for each day, but after the usability studies I added an option to select yes or no for every given days meal.

Mockups

Before Usability Studies

After Usability Studies

The second usability study showed that users wanted an option to save their progress in the meal plan section. I added an additional area in the orders screen to allow this.

Before Usability Studies

After Usability Studies

The visual design is meant to be friendly and inviting. Design choices with buttons and navigation were intentional in their ability to make the user’s journey as easy as possible.
